RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.
British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."
In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
