The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
