The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
