Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
