The Princess of Wales's Yearly Christmas Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers
The Princess of Wales is hosting her annual Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.
The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of carols, music and readings from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Centred Around Love and Generosity
The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
Among the guests will be Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a child with a terminal illness.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an profound impact to the lives of others," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Musical Talent and Access
Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists aided by the Future Talent charity, established in part by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been supported by the trust, with grants helping towards instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be playing at the evening's event.
"Music can be very expensive," she stated. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to develop their musical skills.
Generations Gathering
Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.
Within the audience will be representatives of different generations.
That will encompass young Saphia Turner, nine, winner of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for food banks.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been decorated with custom-created holiday decorations, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
